Affordable, veteran-friendly apartments advance in McKees Rocks

Chartiers Avenue Apartments

A new apartment complex is moving forward in McKees Rocks.

The Borough Planning Commission recently recommended approval of a lot consolidation and preliminary land development plan for the Chartiers Avenue Apartments — a four-story, 44-unit building at the corner of Chartiers and Island avenues. The apartment complex is led by developer ACTION Housing Inc. in partnership with the McKees Rocks Community Development Corp.

Eleven of the 44 units will be reserved for veterans and nine units will meet ADA mobility standards. The building will also include internal parking and ground-floor retail space, with community interest pointing toward a café or deli.

Design plans draw on research about how building features affect veterans with PTSD, favoring open sightlines, wider hallways and natural light.

If approvals and financing stay on track, construction could begin in early 2027, with residents moving in by fall 2028.
